Patent or trade mark attorneys usually work either in IP departments of large industrial organisations or in private firms of patent attorneys.
The work of a patent or trade mark attorney deals with obtaining and enforcing intellectual property rights. In order to do so you need an excellent command of both the written and spoken word to enable you to draft comprehensive documents and defend your client through complex legal debate. It is also an advantage to be conversant with another language
Your degree will be the basis on which you build your knowledge of IP law through an on-going training programme requiring further study.
Training, spanning between three and five years, is usually ‘on-the-job’ allowing you to develop not only your experience of IP but also your business acumen and commercial skills.
